UN needs to recognize the urgency to save the ocean and the people

1 minute read

In a recent interview with France 24, a French state-owned international news television network based in Paris, WorldFish's Interim Director General, Essam Yassin Mohammed, expressed his perspectives regarding the recent negotiations that took place at the 2022 InterGovernmental Conference on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (4th Session) (BBNJ IGC4).

Watch the event recording:

Following the outcomes of the conference, UN member states have failed to agree on a treaty deal to create a legal framework for establishing vast marine protected areas to prevent loss of wildlife, oversee industrial fishing, and share out the “genetic resources” of the sea. According to Mohammed, the failure comes at the expense of poorer nations and has huge environmental and economic costs for the ocean and the vulnerable people depending on it.
