Message from Mr. Bradford R. Philips (ANRSSD)

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is a multilateral development finance institution dedicated to reducing poverty in Asia and the Pacific. Established in 1966, ADB is now owned by 59 members, mostly from the region.

The Bank's strategic development objective focuses on the adoption of poverty reduction as a fight against poverty. ADB continues to carry out activities to promote economic growth, develop human resources, improve the status of women, and protect the environment, but these strategic development objectives now serve its poverty reduction agenda. Its other key development objectives, such as law and policy reform, regional cooperation, private-sector development, and social development, also contribute significantly to this main goal.

In 1998, a number of participating developing member countries (DMCs) of the Bank requested WorldFish Center and ADB to initiate a regional collaborative effort in developing appropriate strategies and options for increasing and sustaining fisheries and aquaculture production, targeting the poor producers and consumers in Asia. In 2000, a regional technical assistance based on the abovementioned research area was provided to WorldFish Center in collaboration with nine DMCs of ADB namely, Bangladesh, PR China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The information from this Project will enable development agencies to formulate country strategies and options for fisheries development and set development and investment priorities geared toward poverty reduction and food security improvement. This research will further enhance ADB's commitment to support DMCs efforts to provide a reliable and adequate supply of nutritious food at prices affordable to different income groups, specially the low-income group. This Project Webpage will tell more of the information regarding the activities of this RETA.

I would like to congratulate the Project Team of WorldFish Center in the establishment of the Project Webpage. I also wish success to WorldFish Center and the nine DMCs in implementing this RETA.

Mr. Bradford R. Philips
Director
Agriculture, Natural Resources and Social Sciences Division
Asian Development Bank (ADB)
