Philippines Senator Loren Legarda addresses the senate on Hunger Amidst Plenty [VIDEO]

On April 2008, an Agreement was signed between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) to establish an Office of the WorldFish in the Philippines. The Agreement provides for the establishment of the WorldFish Office in the Philippines to undertake activities for research and development of aquatic and maritime resources in the Philippines and nearby regions.

Sometime in 2011 the President of the Philippines has ratified the Agreement and has accordingly submitted to the Senate for concurrence. On 2 February 2012 the hearing conducted by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations with several government agencies and nongovernment organizations and endorsed the concurrence in the ratification of the Agreement.

On 14 February 2012 the Sponsorship Speech of Senator Loren Legarda (Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations) was delivered at the Senate Session Hall to seek approval of the Senate Resolution concurring the Ratification of the Agreement based on Senate Committee Report No. 124 / Senate Resolution No. 708.

On 6 March 2012, the Philippines Senate have adopted/approved Senate Resolution No. 79 otherwise known as "Resolution Concurring in the Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) to establish the Office of the WorldFish in the Philippines" .

What is significant here is that there is now a recognition of the Philippine Government for WorldFish office in the Philippines and to undertake research and development activities. Hence, this is very important as we roll out AAS activities with the Philippines as one of the program countries.
