Training Course: Library Management Training Course
Area/project activity/subject/coverage
Training program for fishery librarians.
Introduction
Easy access to fisheries and aquatic sciences information is a major problem confronting researchers and policy-makers of developing countries. Such adverse conditions will affect the quality of research, technology transfer and policies made, which in turn will affect the livelihood of millions of poor fishers, farmers in developing countries and the consumers of aquatic products in general. A key issue in improving the transfer of information on fisheries is the training of library staff. Librarians need to understand fully the mechanisms of information management and dissemination and their role as information providers. Only when they have sharpened their skills in collecting, storing, retrieving, presenting and managing information can they act effectively as the providers of links between people and knowledge.

The WorldFish Center Library aims to play an important role in helping other fishery libraries manage their resources better. It has the facilities and staff to conduct training/ capacity building for library staff from developing country institutions. Moreover it is committed to the aim of assisting and training librarians from developing countries to become better information intermediaries. It aims to provide an opportunity for fishery librarians with limited formal library education and tenure working in a library to be trained on traditional librarianship skills and also information and communications technology (ICT) applications, such as computers, databases, and the Internet.
