A research agenda for small-scale fisheries
WorldFish concentrates its research activities most heavily in three regions:
- Africa, where the need to reduce high levels of hunger and poverty is the greatest;
- Asia, where small-scale fisheries are particularly important to the food and economic security of huge numbers of people;
- and the South Pacific, where island nations have high rates of poverty and a heavy dependence on coastal-based livelihoods.
WorldFish has singled out four categories of research aimed at improving the resilience and productivity of small-scale fisheries in developing countries.
1) Including small-scale fisheries in national and regional development policies
2) Integrating assessment and advisory systems for small-scale fisheries management
3) Improving management and governance of small-scale fisheries
4) Building institutional capacity for adaptive learning among small-scale fishers
A WorldFish Center publication on small-scale fisheries is in preparation.
