This site is an output of the international Research Project “Food security and poverty alleviation through improved valuation and governance of river fisheries in Africa” funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Project: 03.7860.4 – 001.00
Contract: 81077029
Programme Objective:
To sustain and improve the livelihoods of the rural poor who depend on fisheries for their employment, income and food security along the rivers of the Lake Chad and Zambezi basins.
Programme Summary:
River fisheries provide an important and often overlooked contribution to the livelihoods, income, and nutrition of many millions of the rural poor. The fisheries are often overlooked as there is insufficient contemporary data to demonstrate their true socio-economic importance, particularly in remote regions.
This project, implemented in the Chad and Zambezi river basins, involves the development of appropriate methods and field surveys to ascertain valuation figures for river fishery systems. This data feeds into a set of policy recommendations for governments, river basin institutions, development assistance agencies, and NGOs. The recommendations will assist national and regional decision-makers to develop and implement improved governance measures to sustain these fisheries and enhance their contribution to poverty alleviation and national food security.
