The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is the government body charged with developing and ensuring the sustainability of marine and fisheries resources in Kiribati. The ministry is responsible for domestic and joint ventures of tuna industry development; licencing of local and foreign fishing vessels; fishing monitoring, control and surveillance; and the management of mineral resources. In addition, the ministry conducts scientific research on existing natural or man-made resources or products and participates in international and regional fisheries programs, including those run by the Pacific Community and FAO Fisheries.
