All fisheries should, ideally, pass through a four stage process of appraisal, assessment, management and monitoring. Fisheries assessment methods are reviewed, as are methods for parameter estimation.
The range of methods available for managing small scale coastal fisheries are reviewed and discussed. It is concluded that only community based limited entry systems will prevent over harvesting in most fisheries.
A joint Sierra Leone/1CLARM project funded by the Commission of the European Communities is presented, whose task is to assemble the available survey and fisheries data on the marine fish resources of Sierra Leone, analyze them, and based thereon, propose a management regime for these resources.
