The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of community based coastal fisheries management as a viable alternative to national government centralized management within the framework of common property resources.

A discussion is presented on the role played by customary marine tenure (CMT) institutions in the regulation of fisheries in the Pacific Ocean Islands. Particular reference is made to the system in operation in Marovo Lagoon, in the Solomon Islands, whereby a number of defined clans control resource use within defined areas of land and sea.

The findings are presented of a search conducted on traditional fishing gear design and construction using the ASFA database (1971-90) and the ICLARM Library and professional staff collections.
