WorldFish’s objective for Myanmar’s MYCulture program is to improve food and income security in the country’s Ayeyarwady Delta and Central Dry Zone regions through the development of small-scale aquaculture To ensure maximum and equitable distribution of the benefits from smallscale aquaculture, the technical component of the program was complemented by a gender and nutrition benchmark study.
Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the five-year Aquaculture for Income and Nutrition (AIN) project improved income and nutrition for thousands of Bangladeshis.
Myanmar is a country with central lowlands including a mega delta, ringed by steep rugged highlands. As the second-most important food after rice, fish is an essential component of the diet in Myanmar, where per capita fish consumption is high at over 25 kg and the preference is for freshwater fish. Domestic fish demand is growing while there is a decline in capture fisheries.
