Ecosystem services and their role in alleviating poverty are centered on a set of gendered social relations. The understanding of these relations between men and women in aquatic ecosystems can unveil gender-based opportunities and constraints along the value chains of the ecosystem services.
The current study aims to compare the technical and economic performance of salted and fresh fish processing associated with Lake Nasser fisheries. The study concluded that investment cost in slated fish processing is lower than fresh fish processing. Salted fish processing generated higher return on investment compared to fresh fish processing.
The demand for fish in Sub-Saharan Africa, as driven by the trend of diet-shift to fish, economic and demographic growth, outstrips supply. The resulting fish deficit is drawing attention of policy makers as it poses threats to economic stability as well as food security in the region.
