An examination was made of data on the length and species composition of the commercial deepsea snapper fishery of the Kingdom of Tonga in order to determine possible use of such information in the determination ofstatus of exploitation. Six major species were used for the analysis--Pristipomoides filamentosus, Etelis coruscans, P. flavipinnis, E. carbunculus, Epinephelus morrhua and E. septembasciatus .

A summary of recent toxic red tides in the southwestern Pacific region is given, showing that the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressa remains the major causative organism of paralytic shellfish poisoning and is apparently continuing to spread around the region. Noctiluca scintillans blooms occur in some countries and have been associated with mass mortality of fish. The raphidophyteChattonella (=Hornellia) has been implicated in both fish and shrimp kills.
