The findings are presented of experiments conducted at the Domasi Experimental Fish Farm in Zomba, Malawi to evaluate the hook-and-line fishing gear and cover pot techniques for harvesting tilapias (Oreochromis shiranus and Tilapia zillii ) from small-scale fish ponds.
An examination is made of problems involved in the extension of aquaculture in traditional villages in Malawi.Aquaculture is relatively new in the country and requires technical support from very competent personnel who are highly trained in specialized institutions. Extension depends upon effective communication, which is very difficult inthe traditional environments in rural Africa due to the different social structures.
A brief account is given of a fish culture trial conducted in Malawi to determine the growth performance of Bathyclarias loweae and its potential for aquaculture.
