The catch-effort relationship of the River Nile is Complicated by such factors as changes in water level and hydrology as well as spawning movements of the fish, which result in uneven distribution of the fish and fishing. The effects ofdam construction on the ecology of the fish fauna are considered, with particular reference to the effects of the Faraskour dam on the river fishery.
An account of the fisheries in the Lake Qarun, Egypt is described in this article. As the salinity of the water increased through the years, Lake Qarun experienced significant ecological effects on its fauna and flora. The original freshwater fish fauna of the lake was drastically affected.
The Anambra and Imo River basins are richly endowed with fishery resources. The use of unconventional fishing methods, such as local poisonous herbs and chemicals and various explosives, threatens to destroy their aquatic resources. Some control measures to be taken are suggested in the following areas: education, patrols, cooperatives and legislation.
