Sixteen papers are presented on existing and proposed designs for hulls and engines of Pacific Island small-scale fishing craft. No single design is adaptable for use throughout the Pacific. The selection of designs and engines should be based on least input of petroleum products. Consideration should be given to standardizing engine models to simplify repairs. A consultative design group is proposed to test combinations of hulls and propulsion systems.
This articles highlights some of the fishery development in the Asia Pacific region, namely Australia, Japan, Thailand, India, Philippines and the South Pacific regions.
The Southern Ocean Salmon project under study by ICLARM and under consideration by Chile has a major element a solmon hatchery tentatively located on the Salto Chico in southern Chile. This discussion, in the form of a progress paper, describe the physical concept on which this hatchery is based and develops a preliminary economic analysis for its operation.
