The Ponape Dory Project has been in existence for almost three years. It was begun in August 1972 with a Federal Office of Economic Opportunity grant of US $150,000. The initial grant was for a two-year period during which seven Oregon-type dories were to be constructed.
In October 1973, a small group of fisheries experts met at The Rockefeller Founda-tion. Present were specialists from the Foundation and representatives of other concerned organizations, including ten other private foundations, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the International Development Research Centre, the United Nations Development Programme, and the World Bank.
