Capacity development is a key cross-cutting theme for FISH, and involves various initiatives to support the achievement of research and development outcomes, with a strong emphasis on partnerships. Capacity development activities include building the capacity of researchers, through to investments in capacity building among aquaculture farmers to apply improved practices, and of fishing communities to implement co-management. Capacity development is an enabler of all change mechanisms of the CRP-level theory of change. Key initiatives involve the development of future research leaders through internships and postgraduate programs, such as through partnerships with the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR, an Africa Center of Excellence in Aquaculture and Fisheries for postgraduate training of aquaculture researchers), and vocational level training in aquaculture at the WorldFish aquaculture research and training center in Abbassa, Egypt.
