The Secretariat for the Pacific Community (SPC), formerly the South Pacific Commission, was founded in 1947 by Australia, France, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States as a nonpolitical organization to restore stability to the region following the turbulence of the Second World War, and to assist in the administering of their dependent territories and to benefit the people of the Pacific. The SPC now serves as an important forum for international cooperation in the Pacific region, and works to address regional issues such as economic development, fisheries, land resources, public health, education and climate change.
