Currently many farming households face health and economic risks because of problems in malnutrition as a result of lack of knowledge and training, improved technologies and processes in farming. From the beginning of the CSISA-BD project, the World Fish Center has initiated introduction improved practices and technologies in rural farming to address malnutrition in farming households. In order to address the problem discussed, as a part of this project it has been felt there is a lack of skilled trainers and training materials.
This poster outlines the key steps in setting up a fish pond for tilapia farming in Solomon Islands, from making the pond to harvesting.
The current status of tilapia culture in Sudan is examined, describing the pond culture system used. Future prospects are also examined. It is believed that great effort is required before fish farming can boost food supply inthe country.
In rural areas of Bangladesh, the vast majority of households own only small or large shaded homestead ponds located next to their dwellings and the pond dikes are covered with large timber trees, a situation where it is quite difficult to produce fish and vegetables on the dikes. Incorporation of appropriate technologies however, can successfully utilize homestead ponds for commercial fish farming that can meet growing protein and nutritional demand.
A discussion is presented on the topic of pond stirring in aquaculture as a means of increasing productivity of the fish ponds. Pond stirring may be done either mechanically or by using aquatic organisms (bioturbation), and increases the nutrients in the water column and resulting microbial production, also supplying food and surfaces for microbial colonization for consumption by fish.
The frustrations encountered when trying to compare technical reports in which fishpond yield figures are reported in a variety of units (e.g., kg/ha, kg/pond, lb/acre, etc.) are familiar to most aquaculturists. However, severe problems may develop when trying to com¬municate research results to other audiences if data are transformed to a hectare basis. The authors gives his own experience in conveying research data to the farmers and the problem encountered.
The present study was carried out to compare the production performance of white fish from traditional and modified traditional culture system in Patuakhali with the following objectives: 1) To know the production performance in traditional and modified traditional culture systems. 2) To observe the economic feasibility of two culture methods 3) To find out the effect of stocking density on survival and production in different culture system. 4) To know the socio-economic status of the fish farmers involved in both culture system.
Small fishponds on irrigated and rainfed rice farms may be used by farmers as pond refuges to hold fish that foragein the ricefield, for breeding and nursing purposes, and for holding fish after rice harvesting. The pond refuge systemis found in China, Indonesia and Thailand and is currently being tested in the Philippines. Advantages of the pond refuge system are listed.
