Fish seed production in ricefields: participatory training and extension manual

This manual shows that by stocking broodfish of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) GIFT strain and fertilized eggs of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in ricefield during boro season, farmer can produce a large numbers of large size quality fingerlings. They can sell these fingerings to traders and neighbours and/or use for early stocking in own ponds and rice fields for grow-out to get higher foodfish production. The farmer can produce enough fish to eat regularly for household consumption.

Comparative study of hatching rates of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell 1822) eggs on different substrates

The hatching rates of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) eggs on four natural substrates: the roots of Nile cabbage (Pistia stratiotes), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), pond weed (Ceratophyllum dermasum) and green grass leaves (Commelina sp.), and four artificial substrates: sisal mats, nylon mats, papyrus mats and kakaban mats, was assessed. Concrete slabs were used as control. The natural substrates performed better than the artificial ones. Pistia roots gave the best mean hatching rate of 66.2 ± 3.62%.

Breeding and propagation of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a floating hatchery, Gabon.

Based on the encouraging results obtained by earlier workers, the concept for a floating hatchery was developed for producing tilapia for both farming and enhanced fisheries in the freshwater lakes and coastal lagoons of Gabon. The research and development work to test this concept was undertaken with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Two places in Gabon were selected, representing climatic and environmental condition similar to other parts of the country.

The adoption process of ricefield-based fish seed production in Northwest Bangladesh: an understanding through quantitative and qualitative investigation

The purpose of the study was to understand the adoption process of ricefield based fish seed production (RBFSP) that has been developed, promoted and established in Northwest Bangladesh. Quantitative investigation based on regression analysis and qualitative investigation using semi-structured interview were carried out to enhance understanding of the adoption process of RBFSP.Quantitative regression analysis showed two important factors: 1) access to suitable rice-plot and 2) availability of tilapia broodfish at the famer level, facilitated adoption of RBFSP.

Broodstock management status and some suggestions to control negative selection and inbreeding in hatchery stocks in Bangladesh

The freshwater river systems and floodplains of Bangladesh are the breeding grounds for 13 endemic species of carps and barbs and a large number of other fish species, including a number of exotic carps and other species that have been introduced for aquaculture. Since 1967, breeding of endemic and exotic aquaculture species for seed producton through hypophysation techniques has become a common practice.

On 22 January 1982, the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLARM) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Development of Sabah, Malaysia (MAFD), signed a Memorandum of Agreement to cooperate and assist each other in research and development projects related to fisheries and aquaculture development. Both parties recognized the tremendous potential for coastal aquaculture development along Sabah's extensive and relatively unpolluted coastline.
