The WorldFish Center and FAO are implementing a regional programme entitled "Fisheries and HIV/AIDS in Africa; investing in sustainable solutions", funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In DR Congo, the main project site is Kasenga area situated in Katanga Province. The Department of Fisheries and National AIDS Council are the main stakeholders who will utilize the results of the research to influence policy.

Aquaculture helping to improve health and nutrition in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has made important human development gains in recent years, reflected by reductions in poverty, mortality of children under five, and chronic malnutrition. These gains have been achieved in spite of frequent natural disasters, volatile food/fuel prices, and the effects of climate change. However, the prevalence of underweight children in the country (41%) is still the highest in the world. Chronic poverty is evident, particularly in rural areas, where many families are unable to meet their food needs.

This report present the matrix and foundation of the study conducted in Katanga, based on the assumption that communities of fishermen in the Kasenga – Luapula – Moero area are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS due to a mix of several socio-economic factors and the presence of female fish traders in the fishing areas (fishing camps).

Assessing potential nutritional and household economic benefits of developing integrated farming systems.

Improved farm household nutrition and a stronger economy are among the principal intended benefits of integrated farming systems based on fish culture. Paradoxically, no controllell research has been conducted to assess the extent to which these intended benefits occur in practice. In this paper the authors present a simple field use methodology for estimating these nutritional and economic benefits, using survey and secondary statistical data from Ghana to model outcomes.

The WorldFish Center and FAO are implementing a regional programme entitled "Fisheries and HIV/AIDS in Africa; investing in sustainable solutions", funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As part of this project, the Overseas Development Group/School of Development Studies was asked to produce a literature review on 'Fisheries and HIV/AIDS in Africa: evidence from social science, medical and policy research'.

In Zambia, the main project site is Kafue flats. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) and National AIDS Council (NAC) are the main stakeholders who will utilize the results of the research to influence policy.

Manutention après capture des produits halieutiques de faible valeur et menaces pour la qualité nutritionnelle: une étude des pratiques dans la région du Lac Victoria

L’objectif de la présente étude est d’examiner les pratiques courantes en matière de transformation, de conservation et d’entreposage des produits halieutiques de faible valeur commercialisés dans la région du Lac Victoria et l’impact de ces pratiques sur la qualité nutritionnelle de ces produits et leur contribution aux populations menacées de malnutrition et aux Personnes Vivant avec le VIH/SIDA (PVV).
