Recent investments in agricultural R&D have dropped by 10% since 2012, yet the World Food Programme (WFP) reports that the current global food crisis is the largest in modern history, with as many as828 million people going to bed hungry every night. The latest IPCC report estimates that climate change is expected to put 183 million additional people at risk of hunger by 2050; and at the same time, the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) 2022 confirms that the global food security environment continues to deteriorate in recent years.

In an upcoming consultative roundtable moderated by a senior researcher from The Economist, the dialogues and discussions will explore pathways of scaling up technologies in the pipeline to tackle key challenges, including rolling out tools to smallholder fishers and farmers, focusing developing the whole food systems (rather than parallel approaches), South-South cooperation and strengthening the voice of women in research and facilitating women to acquire assets. This CGIAR event will include a panel on ‘Financial Flows in the Agrifood Sector in the Global South.’

By convening a diverse set of stakeholders and partners, including WorldFish's Global Lead for Nutrition and Public Health, Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, CGIAR seeks to ensure an inclusive process of co-creation of solutions with multiple voices and perspectives from a range of global constituencies from the Global South, including the most poor and vulnerable.
