Countries are increasingly recognising the value in developing holistic and comprehensive plans to support a sustainable ocean economy. These plans help to ensure ocean resources can continue to drive national economies and benefit all members of society, including the 3 billion people who depend on ocean resources for their livelihoods.

With more than 40% of the global population living within 150 km of the ocean and almost 80% of all mega cities being coastal, millions of people rely on fishing and mariculture, shipping, tourism and offshore energy for their livelihoods. The need for sustainable ocean management that restores ocean health and delivers equitable prosperity is needed now more than ever.

In an upcoming virtual roundtable discussion hosted by World Resources Institute (WRI), a group of researchers will convene to unpack the issue of equity within the ocean space and collaboratively develop practical ideas for how to advance equitable planning processes and support the development of sustainable ocean economy plans that reduce inequalities in the ocean economy and ensure everyone can benefit from the ocean.

As part of our commitments to ensure ocean resources are managed equitably and decision-making processes are inclusive, WorldFish's Interim Director of Research and Innovation, Edward Allison, will join the discussion to share solutions on how local communities can be included in ocean development planning processes and economic benefits equitably distributed through increased local buy-in and improvements made to support, compliance and regulations, in relation to the WorldFish's '2030 Research and Innovation Strategy.'
