The ocean is essential to life on earth. For humans, it provides food, jobs, energy and communication highways. The ocean helps regulate our climate, controls weather patterns and produces oxygen for us to breathe. However, today the ocean is under threat from the effects of climate change, over-fishing, pollution and loss of biodiversity. Safeguarding the ocean for future generations is a shared responsibility and a matter of global urgency.

WorldFish focuses on generating evidence-based solutions that inform policies and practices relating to sustainable ocean governance and the development of an inclusive and people-centered blue economy, with special attention for the value and contribution of small-scale fisheries. WorldFish Research Program Leader for Value Chains and Nutrition, Dr. Shakuntala Thilsted will be participating in the plenary session discussion on 24 October 2019, from 9.10 am to 10.30 am. Refer below to know more about the topics that will be discussed by the panelist:

Food and livelihoods from the ocean

People, communities and nations depend on the ocean for their physical and economic well-being. A healthy ocean is necessary for global food security and will generate higher sustained value creation and help significantly to meet some of humanity’s most urgent needs. The ocean contributes to global food security as a provider of foods with essential nutrients, as well as incomes and livelihoods. How can we ensure access to sufficient, safe and nutritious foods from the ocean that meet dietary needs and food preferences for a growing population? How do we build a food value chain that can deliver from a healthy ocean to healthy people?
