WorldFish has been awarded the Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge grand prize of $250,000 for proposing a game-changing innovation 'Nutrient-rich small fish production, processing and marketing in Myanmar and Zambia (SPM).' This innovation utilizes dried fish powder from nutrient-dense small fish as part of healthy, affordable, and sustainable diets for vulnerable communities in developing countries.
Funded by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), a not-for-profit US-based organization, the goal of the SPM project is to increase the production, processing and marketing of nutrient-rich fish to improve the diet diversity and income, food and nutrition security of vulnerable groups, especially young children and pregnant and lactating women, in Myanmar and Zambia.
To launch the initiative, leaders and members of the project from WorldFish gathered virtually to present the rationale behind the design, implementation and potential achievements of the project. Together with partners from Myanmar and Zambia, the panel also discussed actionable solutions to support this innovative project through policy, investment and interventions to tackle nutrient deficits and empower consumers to make choices for healthier people and planet.
