The SSF Hub Presents: Fisher Voices is a series of webinar in 2022 that facilitate the exchange of stories, best practices, and actions needed to protect the lives and livelihoods of small-scale fishers worldwide. These webinars will highlight important topics, voiced by small-scale fishers and fishworkers, to build increased awareness of the issues facing small-scale fishing communities and drive action to support them via the implementations of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries.

Women are involved in all aspects of the fisheries sector and play important roles in the direct fishing, processing, marketing, and conservation of natural resources, while also maintaining their family and household responsibilities. Despite the important role that women play in small-scale fishery operations and the benefits of aquatic foods to womens’ and childrens’ health, women are overrepresented in fisheries and labor but are underrepresented in governance and therefore face many barriers to meaningful participation.

In this webinar, research and policy experts came together to foster a greater understanding of the unique role that women play in small-scale fisheries and the benefits of aquatic foods to womens’ health and childhood development. Together with local and national government officials, they discussed action items based on evidence-based knowledge development to design and implement national-level policy that centers women's inclusion, agency and leadership in small-scale fisheries.
