The Government of Bangladesh has clearly stated that agriculture, food security and nutrition are major priorities for the country. In the 2010 Bangladesh Country Investment Plan (CIP) a coherent set of priority investment programs to improve food security and nutrition in an integrated way has been laid out. One step in implementing the plan was made today at the Hotel Sarina where a seminar was held on agriculture-nutrition Linkages within the Bangladesh CIP.
On behalf of the Government of Bangladesh, Professor M. A. Sattar Mandal, Member of Planning Commission, Agriculture, Water Resources and Rural Institution Division, Ministry of Planning, attended as chief guest speaking on the policies and strategies for improving food and nutrition security in Bangladesh. Also speaking at the seminar on the agriculture-nutrition linkages in the CIP was Mr. Naser Farid, Director General, Food Planning and Monitoring Unit, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management.
Organized by WorldFish, an international organization committed to reducing poverty and hunger through fisheries and aquaculture, and one of the CGIAR Consortium centers, the seminar included presentations from CGIAR Consortium Centers including CIMMYT, CIP, IFPRI, IRRI and WorldFish, as well as AVRDC. A broad range of partners and stakeholders, including representatives of key ministries and government institutions; research institutions, national and international NGOs, UN and bilateral agencies also attended the seminar and participated actively in the discussions.
The seminar led to identification of opportunities for greater impact through partnerships, investment and research. The results will help to inform and plan the Government of Bangladesh’s prioritization towards agriculture, food security and nutrition.
