The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has awarded Global Technical Recognition to WorldFish in the Sustainable Aquatic Food Systems category during FAO’s 80th anniversary flagship event in Rome. The honour recognizes innovations and best practices that are reshaping global agrifood systems – an urgent priority in today’s climate crisis to ensure food and nutrition security.
Presented at FAO Headquarters as part of the World Food Forum, the recognition highlights WorldFish’s leadership in developing science-based, inclusive and climate-smart solutions that strengthen the role of aquatic foods in ending poverty, improving nutrition and protecting ecosystems.
The award coincides with WorldFish’s 50th year of research and innovation in sustainable aquaculture and fisheries, marking five decades of science, innovation and partnerships that continue to drive change for people and planet.
Dr. Essam Yassin Mohammed, Director General of WorldFish, called it a milestone moment for aquatic food science and innovation.
"This recognition reflects fifty years of science, partnership and persistence. Across the Global South, WorldFish and our partners are proving that aquatic foods can feed people, nourish communities, restore ecosystems and power an equitable and resilient blue economy," he said.
FAO’s Global Technical Recognition showcases leadership across six technical domains, including livestock, forestry and aquatic food systems, highlighting replicable models that advance food security, innovation and sustainability worldwide.
As FAO celebrates 80 years of action for “better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life,” the award underscores the essential role of aquatic foods in building climate-resilient livelihoods and nourishing a growing world.
